Introduction
Wuhan University is a comprehensive and key national university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It is a participant university of the "985" project and "211 Project" in China and also one of the first universities approved under the national "Double First Class" initiative. In 2022, the University ranked 157 in the Thames Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, 101-150 in the Soft Science World University Academic Ranking (ARWU), and 194 in the QS World University Ranking, an international education research institution.
Wuhan University is located in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, which enjoys the reputation of "thoroughfare of nine provinces", with convenient transportation. The university features spectacular natural surroundings with the scenic Luojia Hill in it and the beautiful East Lake by its side. Its 346-hectare campus is wooded and green, and has fragrant flowers everywhere all the year round. The buildings are in special architectural styles, magnificent and mansion looking. Therefore, Wuhan University is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful universities in China.
Wuhan University dates back to Ziqiang Institute, which was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan Provinces in late Qing Dynasty after the Qing Government approved his memorial to the throne. Later, its name changed for several times before it was named National Wuhan University in July 1928. With the approval of the State Council of China, new Wuhan University was founded on August 2nd, 2000 with amalgamation of four first-rate universities-- original Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electrical Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University. Wuhan University had a glorious innovative tradition and enjoyed a very high academic prestige.
At present, Wuhan University has 34 schools in 6 faculties and 3 A-Level Grade Ⅲ affiliated hospitals, covering 12 areas, namely philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management and Art, with 133 bachelor programs, 59 master degree programs, 49 PhD programs, and 46 post-doctoral stations.
The faculty member of Wuhan University consists of more than 3800 teachers, including 3000 or so professors and associate professors, 10 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of the international Eurasian Academy of Sciences, 15 well-known senior scholars of arts and social sciences.
The impressive achievement in education has won Wuhan University a wide international reputation. International communication and cooperation is becoming increasingly frequent. The University has established cooperation and communication relations with 310 universities and scientific research institutions in 53 countries and regions.
Wuhan University has been receiving international students since the 1930s, and is one of the earliest institutions in China to admit international students. So far, Wuhan University has received and trained nearly 11,000 international students from more than 169 countries and regions in the world.

International Cooperation
The internationalization of Wuhan University dates back to the 1980s. As one of the first key universities to conduct external contacts with the outside world, WHU has always attached great importance to the international exchanges and cooperation. Over the years, under the overall blueprint of building a world-top university with Chinese characteristics, WHU has followed the path of running the school in an international way, strengthening exchanges and cooperation with world-class universities and scientific research institutions.
Now WHU has signed cooperation agreements with more than 400 universities and research institutions in over 70 countries and regions for in-depth cooperation of high quality in various fields, including University of Chicago, Duke university, University of Cambridge and London School of Economics and Political Science(LSE), National University of Singapore, Erasmus University Rotterdam(EUR), Université Paris Diderot-Paris, etc.
WHU aims to cultivate talents with international perspectives through the introduction of overseas high-quality education resources, the joint education programs with foreign universities and the student exchange both in the long term and short term. Every year more than 2000 students are sent to partner universities for exchange and further study. WHU boasts a nice atmosphere of international academic exchange, receiving around 1000 important foreign delegations per year and hiring about 100 foreign experts as permanent faculty. More than 30 international academic meetings are held here annually. Moreover, WHU has a particular advantage in the contacts with France through many high-level exchange projects, which were acclaimed as “the model for China-France cooperation” by the former French president Jacques chirac.
International Education:Duke Kunshan University
Duke Kunshan University is a non-profit institution with an independent corporate capacity. By adapting Duke’s curriculum system and interdisciplinary education models along with WHU’s leading experts and facilities, it aims to be a cutting-edge university with outstanding faculty, scientific research and development centers.
Confucius Institute
Four Confucius Institutes have been founded respectively in France, America, Germany and UK by joint efforts of Wuhan University and Universite de Paris VII, University of Pittsburgh, University Duisburg-Essen and University of Aberdeen. Courses of Chinese language, calligraphy, Tai-Chi, Chinese cuisine and diversified cultural activities are organized to help the local people have a better understanding of Chinese culture and society.
International Joint Training Program
Cooperating with prestigious universities abroad, Wuhan University has launched joint training programs in the field of physics, chemistry, medicine, computer science, remote sensing, law, economics, etc. to mentor talents with international experience, perspective and competitiveness. The programs have made students’ dream of studying abroad come true.
Alliance Francaise de Wuhan
Alliance Francaise de Wuhan, co-founded by Wuhan University and alliance francaise foundation, is a non-degree education school fostering French language and culture. Over the past decade, Alliance Francaise de Wuhan has developed into one of the largest institutions among all Alliance Francaise in China.
School of International Education
Wuhan University has a long history of international students’ education. Since 1950s, it had begun to enroll oversea students. It is one of the earliest universities to recruit foreign students. In 2016, Wuhan University has more than 3500 international students, covering 200 majors in 30 schools (departments, research centers), and now it has developed gradually into the biggest international students’ destination in central and western China.
Integrating international education resources within the university, School of International Education(SIE) was set up in October 2014 to further enhance the University’s internationalization, responsible for international students’ enrollment and cultivation, education and research on teaching Chinese as a foreign language, studying abroad education and the above-related daily administration. The school also takes in charge of Center of Teaching Resources Research and Development for International Promotion of Chinese.
School of International Education of Wuhan University is one of the first members to have passed the certification of studying abroad in China. It is the attestation center of TCSOL & TCFL, the studying abroad training base of Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, one of the centers of HSK examination, BCT examination and the qualification examination for the teachers teaching Chinese to foreigners in China. The school has three teaching and research teams which are Chinese, foreign languages and economics & law, plus one research institute in TCSOL. The school offers undergraduate program of Chinese Language, master program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages for international students, and Master program of International Law (WTO international trade Constitution), WTO double degree, English and French overseas training programs for domestic students.
During the service in international education, research, management and administration, SIE has accumulated abundant teaching experience, management experience and research outcomes. There are 48 full-time teachers, among which 33 are TCFL teachers. In all the 33 TCFL teachers, there are 5 professors and 10 associate professors----senior level faculty takes about 45.5%; and 26 (78.8%) have got a PhD degree or are in the process of studying for one; there are 25 (up to 81%) have got the qualification certificates issued by the Ministry of Education for teaching Chinese language to foreigners; including 14 members of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching. In addition to the above full-time teachers, the school have also recruited more than 10 part-time teachers and many academicians in Chinese language teaching.
