According to the Announcement of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (No 54 of 2010) on Defining the Duty-free Regulations on Personal Belongings of Inbound Passengers, resident travelers entering China with personal items obtained overseas valued at up to 5,000 RMB (inclusive) and intended for personal use will be exempted from taxes by Customs. For non-resident travelers bringing items for personal use in China valued at up to 2,000 RMB (inclusive), Customs will grant a tax-free passage. These items must be of reasonable quantity and intended solely for personal use. However, tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and 20 other specified items subject to taxation under national regulations will be handled according to relevant provisions.
Resident travelers entering China with items for personal use exceeding 5,000 RMB, which are deemed for personal use after examination by Customs authorities, will be subject to taxation on the excess amount. For non-resident travelers entering China with items for personal use with a value exceeding 2,000 RMB, Customs will levy taxes on the portion exceeding this amount. However, indivisible single items exceeding the limit will be taxed at their full value.
