Song Dynasty Culture
In the eighth year of Shaoxing (1138 AD), Hangzhou became the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty. The following 800 years of time has helped making the city’s Song aesthetics an integral part of people’s daily life. Every year, from May to June, Hangzhou stages the Song Culture · Hangzhou Magic Night, an event that centers on a deep expression and innovative interpretation of the Song Culture and aims to render the ancient cultural legacy more visible, touchable and and experiential.
Deshou Palace Site Museum of Southern Song Dynasty
Built next to the ruins of Deshou Palace, the former living space of Emperor Gaozong and Emperor Xiaozong in the Southern Song Dynasty, the museum focuses on the protection, research, collection and exhibition of the site itself and the unearthed cultural treasures, as well as the display of the historical and cultural relics of the era. There you can see the restored Song Dynasty imperial palace buildings, the scenes of the imperial palace life, as well as the original ruins.

Southern Song Imperial Kiln Museum
The imperial kiln porcelain of the Southern Song Dynasty stands at the peak of ancient ceramic production with its smooth and simple design and exquisite glaze. The fi rst ceramic museum built on the basis of an ancient kiln site in China, the Southern Song Imperial Kiln Museum exhibits a large number of imperial celadon wares and folk porcelain pieces of the dynasty. Along with the tour, experience programs, such as porcelain restoration and hand-production, are also available.

Yue Fei Temple /Yuewangmiao
The temple was built in memory of Yue Fei, a famous Southern Song general who fought against the invading Jin army. The solemn-looking memorial consists of Loyalty-martyr Hall, Loyalty-inspiration Hall, Yue Fei Tomb, Yue Yun (the son) Tomb and some fi ne stone carvings from the Ming Dynasty.

King Qian’s Temple /Qianwangci
Dating back to 1077 AD, the shrine was built by later generations to commemorate the Qian clan who built the Wuyue Kingdom, and to a large extent, Hangzhou, as well. The former kings’ memorial, comprising of Hall of Dedication, Hall of Meritorious Officials, Hall of Five Kings, stone steles, murals, and other artifacts, records the exploits of the three generations of monarchs from the clan. The fl owering season of wintersweet every year is the best time to visit. The yellow blossom and the surrounding red walls add radiance to each other, giving full play to the temple’s Chinese classical charm.
