Shanghai

Introduction

Wellington College in England was founded by Queen Victoria in 1859 as a national monument to Britain’s most renowned military figure, the Duke of Wellington, Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, a statesman and soldier who also served the country with distinction twice as Prime Minister. Over 160 years later, the College is one of the most respected schools in the United Kingdom and one of its greatest educational institutions, pioneering, innovating and transforming education for girls and boys.
In partnership with Wellington College in England, Wellington College China (WCC) opened its inaugural school, Wellington College International Tianjin, in August 2011. Wellington College China continued to grow with the opening of Wellington College International Shanghai in 2014 and the creation of WCC Huili to promote bicultural education. This resulted in the opening of Huili Nursery Shanghai in 2016. Further schools followed with Huili School Shanghai, Huili Nursery Hangzhou, Huili School Hangzhou and Wellington College International Hangzhou all opening in August 2018. Then, in 2022, Huili School Nantong, Wellington College China’s flagship boarding school, opened in September 2022.
Wellington international schools teach a curriculum based on the English National Curriculum, while Huili schools combine the best of the British and Chinese education systems for Chinese pupils aged 2–18.
Today, the Wellington College Family has 10 schools in England, Thailand and China. Wellington College China continues to flourish and plans to take its bicultural education model overseas within the next few years.

Our Vision and Purpose
We offer a pioneering education to serve and help shape a better world, combining the very best of British and international education to create a pupil-centric, multilingual, multicultural and inclusive learning experience.
We inspire our children to be the best version of themselves, to take pride in where they come from and to be the change they wish to see in the world.
Be You. Be More.
Inspiring our children to be Learners, Connectors, and Changemakers.

Why Wellington
Whether it is for our youngest pupils in the Pre-Nursery or the eldest studying for the IB Diploma, the Wellington College curriculum is vibrant, progressive and demanding. Our staff are purpose-driven to help all pupils realise their full potential. This bears out in our pupils' consistently high examination scores and the growing list of world-class universities accepting them. But our metric of your child’s success goes beyond test scores and university acceptances. At Wellington, we educate the whole child. Our unique school culture, our diverse offering of co-curricular activities and our comprehensive pastoral care instil in our pupils a set of core values that will equip them for success for the rest of their lives.
Accreditation
Wellington College China schools are accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), International Baccalaureate Organization World Schools (IBO) and Council of British International Schools (COBIS).
Our Shanghai campuses are certified to offer the IB examination. Our Tianjin, Hangzhou and Nantong campuses are certified to offer the A Level examinations. Our Tianjin and Hangzhou campuses are certified to offer LAMDA drama courses and examinations. We also offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
Additionally, our network of schools hosts shared events with leading universities, organisations and local professional institutes.
Our Education
Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage or out among the broader community, a Wellington education will prepare pupils to become confident, independent, and resilient young people.
Our Early Years education will provide your child with a stimulating, nurturing and, most importantly, fun learning environment. Linked to the expectations of the English EYFS curriculum. Each class is overseen by a certified teacher and qualified teaching assistant. Under their care, children explore the essentials of phonics, maths, literacy, and Chinese language through fun and engaging play-based activities.

In Primary School, pupils build the foundations for long-term academic success. We use the English National Curriculum as a starting point, enhancing it with elements from the International Primary Curriculum. It is during this phase that pupils make the pivotal transition from general classroom teaching to specialised teaching and learn to take greater ownership of their learning. Meanwhile, an extensive programme of co-curricular activities broadens their horizons, helping them to discover new talents and passions.

Pupils in our Senior School cultivate an abiding passion for our global scientific, linguistic and cultural heritage. In years 10 and 11, pupils work toward the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examination qualifications. Sixth form pupils study the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the A Level programme. These globally recognised university entrance exams explore academic subjects in depth and breadth. Upon completion, they will be fully prepared to succeed at the world’s premier institutions of higher learning and beyond.

With a Huili education, pupils learn to become globally minded citizens of the world as they gain a deeper understanding of China’s rich cultural heritage. It follows the rigorous framework of the Chinese national curriculum, blending the most appropriate and effective elements of Western education. And our Chinese and Western co-teaching approach creates a truly immersive bilingual experience for all pupils
Huili Nursery seamlessly merges the English EYFS and Chinese national curriculums to create an effective framework for teaching and learning. Here, pupils build the foundations for academic success and gain basic life skills. They learn through play, following their instincts and curiosity in our specially designed indoor and outdoor learning environments.
In Primary School, instruction in both Chinese and English ensures that pupils not only learn a second language but learn how to learn in a second language. Moreover, by embedding the Huili Values and Identities into our teaching, pupils form healthy, positive and moral characteristics that prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead in Junior and High School.
In Junior High, pupils’ exploration of each subject becomes much deeper and richer than the primary level, as they develop their thinking abilities and language skills across all subject areas, which is required to become fully bilingual. They learn in an environment that encourages communication, creativity and critical thinking, soft skills that will serve them well beyond their academic career.
The curriculum in Huili High Schools is demanding. Pupils are encouraged to venture beyond their comfort zone, as they explore challenging subjects and discover and develop talents that world’s best schools look for in a candidate.
