Beijing

Introduction

YCIS Beijing opened in 1995 with the aim of bringing the educational philosophy, objectives and pedagogy of Yew Chung to Beijing's expatriate families. Over the past 20 years, YCIS Beijing has grown rapidly and now has a student body of over 800 who come from over 45 nationalities and are educated by teachers from 30 countries under an international curriculum that nurtures truly global-minded students.
YCIS Beijing is a fully accredited school, recognised by the Council of International Schools (CIS).
In addition, the Secondary School is authorised as an accredited Cambridge International Examinations Centre and International Baccalaureate World School (IB World School).
As an IB World School, we are proud to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as part of our international curriculum. Furthermore, we are the only school in China to have received the Cambridge Award for Excellence in Education.
Why YCIS
At each stage, a YCYW education offers a truly unique, bilingual, and international experience for every student. Our students’ educational journey begins at infancy and concludes with matriculation. The learning experience is highly personalised and designed to meet each individual's academic and personal needs.
Paramount in this is our unique emphasis on character-building and a holistic approach to education.
Our students develop the thinking and values necessary to become positive influences on their local and global communities. It is a natural outcome for YCYW students to become caring global citizens.

A. The Yew Chung Approach to Early Childhood Education
The Yew Chung Approach is not a set of discrete practices, rather it is a philosophy that draws together Confucian teachings with John Dewey’s Western Progressive Education theory, aiming at providing an inclusive learning environment of both Chinese and Western culture, and has laid the foundation for the 21st century early childhood education curriculum development with innovation. The core of the philosophy is the 12 Values that lie beneath everyday practices and staff structure, lifting the education of young children from an instrumental activity to one that is a moral practice and also a guide for relationships between adults and children and between peers.
“The Yew Chung Approach to Early Childhood Education – Centering Emergent Curriculum, Child-led Inquiry, and Multilingualism” has been internationally released by Routledge, the leading academic publisher, which was curated by Dr Stephanie Sanders-Smith. Professor Kathy Sylva of Oxford University, an expert in early childhood education, spoke highly of this book and believed that the “Yew Chung Approach” offers a unique and innovative perspective to the field of education around the world. The entire settings are also applicable to primary, secondary and tertiary education.

The 12 Values
Throughout its 90 years, YCYW has won acclaim for its pioneering spirit. The 12 Values is at the heart of our Yew Chung Yew Wah Early Childhood Education. The 12 Values approach centres on strong relationships that encourage the inner-transformation of young learners as they acquire knowledge, personal skills and character traits of a global citizen. We embed the 12 Values in the design of the indoor and outdoor learning environments, as well as in the intentional daily interactions and routines of school life.
Dr. Stephanie Sanders-Smith, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been researching, refining and articulating the Yew Chung Yew Wah 12 Values approach in Early Childhood Education since 2016. This ongoing research provides great insight into our approach to early childhood education. The 12 Values are set out in a pyramid that visually demonstrates the interplay between these areas.
These 12 Values are a distillation of our rich educational experience spanning over 90 years, to present a clear purpose and path. They represent a framework for constant, dynamic evolution. They are a set of aspirations to guide educators. These values will be extended to our Primary and Secondary operations and a wider community as we move forward.

B. Bilingual Learning Communities
Our Bilingual Learning Communities equip students with a high level of proficiency in both English and Chinese as well as the skills and a global outlook necessary to succeed in an interconnected world. Our programmes are student-led, embracing personalised and shared learning so that every student is challenged to think and learn more. We know learning does not happen in isolation so we teach through an inter-disciplinary lens that allows students to delve deep into issues and to connect with the real-world. In our collaborative Bilingual Learning Communities, we place a strong emphasis on each student’s soft skills development. This includes critical thinking, communication, social skills, self-management, creativity and more. These skills are reinforced from ECE through to Upper Secondary to ensure students develop a holistic approach to learning — a lifelong pursuit that goes well beyond just academics.
Our state-of-the-art facilities provide space where collaboration and innovative thinking become a natural part of the learning process. In our schools, we enhance and transform the learning and teaching in novel ways with the latest in EdTech. Our students harness the power of the best emerging technologies in order to learn outside the box.

C. Character Education
Character Education is one of the YCYW education core values. In our character education, students are made aware of their responsibilities to their families, schools, and society, and develop a good character to serve and contribute to the community. Through acquiring practical skills, they can overcome challenges at ethical, moral, spiritual, social, and cultural levels, gradually developing their own values and beliefs, making them individuals with a global perspective, caring for others, and having the courage to take on responsibility.
D. Chinese Curriculum
Our Chinese curriculum has gained international recognition and is an essential component of our Bilingual Learning Communities. Designed to meet the needs of learners across different age groups, whether they are native or non-native Chinese speakers, our curriculum equips students with the ability to communicate and learn effectively in Chinese. Our goal is to cultivate bilingual individuals who possess a global perspective.
Our curriculum is informed by the latest research findings, and our team of professional Chinese teachers is dedicated to meeting the individual learning needs of each student, effectively enhancing their Chinese language skills. In addition to language learning, our Chinese curriculum includes various supplementary components, such as Chinese Studies, Five-minute Chinese Classics, the Chinese Reading Programme, and the China Classroom Programme, among others.

Child Protection
YCIS schools fully recognise their responsibilities regarding child protection, and the welfare of all students is of paramount importance to the YCYW community. We aim to create a safe, secure and supportive learning environment for our students. We believe that all students have a right to be protected from neglect as well as physical, sexual and emotional abuse.
YCIS schools are committed to providing education and support to students, parents and teachers in all aspects of safeguarding.
YCIS schools have in place Child Protection Policy and Procedures, outlining the principles, processes and procedures for dealing with potential child neglect and abuse. The school expects all employees, partners, parents and volunteers to be committed to and support the Child Protection Policies and Procedures of the school.
Visitors to YCIS campuses should be aware of the Child Protection Notice for Visitors.
Community Partners who work with our students at YCIS schools are expected to sign and adhere to the Adult Code of Conduct for Working With Students.
We invite community members to read the school's Anti-Bullying Policy and Procedures.
All of these measures are in place to safeguard our students.

Families should contact Admissions directly for any details pertaining to student enrollment.

YCIS Network of Schools - Internal Transfer
All YCIS schools operate under the same educational philosophy, pedagogy, and curriculum. We understand expatriate families sometimes need to be relocated around China and Hong Kong in particular. Therefore, we offer existing YCIS students a convenient process and priority admission when transferring to any school within our network.
